Marbles--Part II
|
by DaySounds © 2019 |
We tried to wake Freddy up--
To no avail;
He was no longer there.
He had already departed
To a better place.
What moved Rex
To lower himself down,
Come, and play with us?
We don't know;
He had never done it before.
Maybe, it was Suzie;
Maybe, he liked the marbles he saw;
Maybe, it was both.
What I do know
Is that Freddy--my good friend,
Even though, he didn't have to,
All our marbles,
At the end of the game,
Would have returned.
Rex was crossing the river,
But instead of using the bridge--
Four hundred yards farther away,
He was walking on the old fallen log,
With confidence, at a steady pace;
Perhaps, trying to show off.
We heard a crack.
Suzie shouted, "Rex, come back!"
...Two, three more cracks.
The old log split apart.
Rex plummeted down
Into the roaring, spring waters
Of the river below.
Ten miles away, his body was found--
Later on,
At the coal mine shore.
The church was quiet.
All of a sudden,
The front door opened.
We couldn't believe our eyes:
There it was: Rex's father.
Ever since his wife died eight years before--
Just a few months after Rex was born,
He only mentioned the name of God
Using curses and dirty words;
Yet, there he was, at church--
Without guns in his holsters,
Without a hat on his head,
And no noisy spurs
On his boots.
Wiping a tear from his eye,
Silently,
He walked down the center aisle.
Slowly, he approached the caskets.
First, he hugged Freddie's, kissed it,
And,
With true sorrow and a silent apology,
Looked at his parents;
Then,
With endless kisses and tears,
He showered Rex's.
At church, there was not even a dry eye.
After a long while,
To the altar he walked,
And kneeling at the cross, he cried out-loud:
Forgive me, Lord!
