Faceless
by Kathryn Wilmotte ©2017

They say each mountain has a face.
But from where I stand, they all look the same:
Alice, Ypsilon, Ouzel,
Isolation.
All big, and white, and faceless.
It's only when I get closer,
When I've struggled through miles of snow and ice
To reach their massive feet,
That I see them: the pits and wrinkles on each side,
The scars that time and wind have wrought.
Some white with snow, some dark with trees,
But none unblemished and none the same.

They say each person has a face.
But from where I stand they all look the same:
Alice, Yvonne, Olivia,
Isabelle.
All small, and white, and faceless.
It's only when I get closer,
When I've struggled to scale the walls of understanding
To reach their sides,
That I see them: the tears and terrors in each eye,
The scars that time and pain have wrought.
Some white with fear, others dark with anger,
But none unblemished and none the same.

They say a single person has many faces.
And when I look at myself I know the same:
Angry, Yielding, Overjoyed,
Isolated.
All at odds, ready for a face-off.
It's only when I let others get closer
That they see: each face belongs to one person,
A Janus scarred by time and pain.
They'll see me white with fear and dark with anger,
Blemished and yet the same.

Better to be known by my scarred heart
Than forever stand at a distance,
Small,
White,
Faceless.

Our Daily Bread, Thursday, August 10, 2017, "Our Father's Face," by David Roper:

"It is good to look away from our fears and search our heavenly Father's face. The best
way to see God's face is to look at the cross. The cross is His 'tell.'"
"Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved." -Psalm 80:3

THE BIBLE

"Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice. Seek Yahweh and His strength; seek His face continually.
Remember the marvelous works that He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth."
--I Chronicles 16: 10-12

"Hear my voice when I call You, oh Yahweh, be merciful to me, and answer me. My heart says of You, 'Seek
His face!' Your face, oh Yahweh, I will seek. Do not hide Your face from me, do not turn Your servant away
in anger; You have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, oh God of my salvation.
"Though my father and my mother forsake me, Yahweh will receive me. Teach me Your way, oh Yahweh,
lead me in a straight path because of my enemies. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false
witnesses have risen up against me, and those who breath out cruelty.
"I would have fainted unless I had believed that I will see the goodness of Yahweh in the land of the living.
Wait on Yahweh; be of good courage, cheer up; yes, wait on Yahweh." --Psalm 27: 7-14
